aSmart HUD

aSamrt HUD is simple and clear vehicle digital dashboard featured by

  • HUD mode
  • SHORT TIME WEATHER FORECAST
  • IPOD PLAYLIST REMOTE CONTROL
  • ADJUSTABLE TRANSPARENCY GOOGLE MAPS SCREEN

It visualizes your
  • current speed,
  • average speed,
  • current time,
  • elapsed trip time,
  • heading,
  • altitude,
  • trip elapsed time,
  • distance/time and direction to stored Home location,
  • weather forecast for nearest 48 hours the with 3-hour time interval,
  • maximum reached speed,
  • direct distance (kilometers, miles, nautical miles supported) to the starting point of your trip.
  • maximum reached speed, altitude and distance to start point, for the current trip and all the trips your ever did.

  • Tapping the "HUD" icon mirrors all the text, so if you position the iPhone horizontally under your car's windscreen you can see perfectly readable half-transparent reflection of the picture displayed.
    We love this mode! We found it much more convenient compared to traditional car dashboards (especially on the roads of Western Europe, which are full of speed cameras and where you need to watch your speedometer all the time). And last but not the least - it just looks cool.
    Note: this mode works pretty well at night time and twilight, but on direct sunlight the screen brightness can be insufficient.
    A couple of YouTube clips, demonstrating how it looks like: night and rainy day.

  • "aSmart HUD" can keep track on 4 speed limits, giving a warning (sound and visual) each time you crossing it. Normally, it's legal speed limits within cities, local roads and high-speed motorways. "Never exceed speed" is the speed you should not exceed under any conditions. For example, it can be a technical limit of your vehicle or the point where government can arrest your driving license.

  • You can access the Google Maps by tapping the "Map" button on the main commands menu.

    Transparency of the Maps could be adjusted by dragging the slide bar on the screen bottom, so you can use speed reading and map at the same time. All standard gestures (like zooming and scrolling) are supported.
    The "pin" button locks map center on your current location.
    You can easily switch between Street, Satellite and Hybrid map types.
    Note: this function uses the internet connection, so depending on your connection plan additional charges may apply.

  • You can skip, rewind, play or pause your current iPod music item. Note, you need use the iPod application to select current playlist and start initial playback.

  • Weather forecast is provided by Norwegian Meteorological Institute and the NRK. "aSmart HUD" uses the 3G or WiFi connection do retrieve the data, each weather update takes about 40-80 kilobytes. You can disable this feature by switching the "Display weather" to "Never". If "Every 3 seconds" option is on, the display will de switched between the weather data and "Distance to Start" in cycle.
    Next two switches define time intervals for the data display. "+3 HR" will show the forecast for the time after 3 hours since cucurrent moment, "+9 HR" - 9 hours, etc.

  • Temperature units (C, F) are selectable on the "Units" tab in Preferences.

  • Speed history log chart is placed on the bottom of the screen.

  • Three different compass styles.
    In "Simple" and "Wrist" compass mode arrow shows your moving direction assuming the Nort is on top (like on majority of modern maps). If you moving South, arrow points to the screen bottom, if you moving West, it points to the left.

  • Location Info (longitude and latitude, GPS measurement precision) and some more data is available on separate screen. You can adjust transparency of the "Location Info" screen to use both views at the same time and change the display units just by a single tap.

    Also you can see the maximum reached speed, altitude or distance from start, for you current trip or for for all the trips you ever did.

  • Tap the speed indicator to switch into speed fullscreen mode;

    In Preferences, you can specify

  • different measurement units (miles per hour, kilometers per hour, knots and meters per second)

  • switch between 12/24 hours time display;

    We found this feature truly useful when traveling from UK to continental Europe in a car with speedometer, marked only in miles.

  • program supports also the portrait orientation mode:

  • several display color schemes

  • Several sound options available: "Electro", "Beep" (just another sound to mark the speed limits) and "Morse", when aSmartHUD beeps morse-code for "ONE" when you crossing the first speed limit, "TWO" for second, and "THREE" for third. The startup sound is morse-coded word "HELLO".

    Red theme may suit the BMW and Audi drivers:

    While Blue theme looks better in Volkswagen Golf or Passat:

  • Speed log chart refresh rate and chart style (bars or dots). With the "Limit Bars" chart style on the color of the bar depends on the speed limit you are driving within. Green, if below first speed limit (city), yellow if below second (public roads), etc.

  • Since version 1.3 you can combine the default color schemes with the custom color of "compass circle".

  • Troubleshooting a.k.a FAQ
    • Application starts up, but speed indication is "frozen":

      Most possible, it just cannot get the satellite signal of acceptable quality. iPhone is equipped with A-GPS chip, what means it calculates location in two stages: first, it using the cell towers. It's very fast, but gives data with low accuracy, up to 1-2 kilometers. This is not enough to calculate your speed! And second, it locates the GPS satellites, what gives 5-100 meters precision, but takes up to 5 minutes. If 5 minutes gone, but the speed is still zero:

      • Tap the "satellite" icon - the "Location Info" screen will show you current GPS accuracy. Note, 3rd party applications cannot control GPS precision!
      • Make sure you are under a clear sky. Strong sourse of radio waves like TV tower also can be a problem;
      • Completely power off/power on your iPhone;
      • Switch on/off "Location services" and "3G" support in your iPhone prefernces;
      • Try to start the standard "Maps" application, wait until it shows your location with good precision ("small circle" around "your location"), and quit it (looks like sometimes it resets something in A-GPS chip).
      • Try other speed-indicating applications, if you have any. We all using the same Apple API calls. If they work, but our application doesn't - please contact us via support@atoll-ordenadores.com.

    • Application quits ("crashes") after 3-10 seconds after startup:

      Tap the "wrench" icon (call "Preferences" screen), got to "Weather" tab, switch "Show Weather" to "None", close "Preferences". The weather forecast is provided by the yr.no website, and they can change the weather data format for some locations without notice. That happened once already, and about 1% of users experienced application crashes. If it helped, please send us your coordinates (latitude and longitude) by email via support@atoll-ordenadores.com, we will try to fix the problem in nearest update.

    • Weather data are different, then in reality:

      Normally, the yr.no website finds the weather station (typically an airport), nearest to your location and retieves the data for it with 3-hour time interval. So, the reading should be understood like "average for nearest 3 hours for an area about 50 kilometers around".

    • No "power cord on right side" landscape mode:

      It's not enabled when you are in "Auto" screen mode (otherwize HUD mode doesn't work properly). Call "Preferences", "Display" and switch "Screen" to "Landscape >".

    • Image "doubles" in HUD mode:

      Actually, it always "doubles", according to simple law of phisics: the windscreen has two surfaces and the iPhone reflects in both. However, one reflection is "more transparent" then another, so the mode itself is pretty much usable. This effect depends on the angle how your windscreen is installed and your position behind the steering wheel. Try to set the iPhone in different position on the car dashboard, use the windscreen mount and play with the "Brightness" settings in iPhone preferences.

    • "Course" and "Compass" reading is wrong:

      The "Compass" shows not the direction how your device is oriented, but the direction where you are moving. Hence, it's wrong when your speed is zero. Also, the precision is quite low if your speed is about 1-15 km/h.

  • Limitations
    • The program is running only on GPS-enabled iPhones 3G (second generation or higher) with iPhone OS 3.0 or higher. No iPod Touch, 1st-generation iPhones or minor OS versions supported.
    • The precision is affected by the satellite signal quality. On open-sky spaces it's pretty good, but under other conditions can noticeably decrease. Also, after startup it requires some time to locate the necessary satellites, so during first minutes of running the measurement can be less effective. If unsure, use the program only for reference, don't rely on it for 100%.

  • Thanks to everyone for your suggestions about additional functionality, there is a big chance they will be implemented in next version. Please forward your requests or bug reports to
